Philip Hernandez is the only man in Broadway history to have played both Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in “Les Miserables.” He made his Broadway debut in the Original Cast of the Tony Award-winning Kander and Ebb musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” directed by Harold Prince. In Kiss, he created the role of Esteban and later went on to play the impassioned revolutionary Valentin in London's West End and on Broadway. Philip also created the role of the Reverend Gonzalez opposite Marc Anthony and Ruben Blades in the Original Cast of Paul Simon's “The Capeman.” He was Rico in the National Tour of Barry Manilow's “Copacabana,” played Juan Peron in Harold Prince’s 25th Anniversary North American Tour of “Evita” and starred in the World Premier of Jose Cruz Gonzalez’ play “Sunsets and Margaritas” at the Denver Center For The Performing Arts. Last season he played “Joe” in the New York City Center Encores production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Pipe Dream” and completed a successful run in Wajdi Mouawad’s award-winning play, “Scorched,” at Syracuse Stage. This season you can see Philip in a recurring role on the new Fox series “Gotham” as the city’s Chief Medical Examiner and also playing opposite Debra Messing in an episode of NBC’s new series “The Mysteries of Laura.” In previous seasons you may have seen him in featured roles on the television series “Elementary,” “Person of Interest,” “Hostages,” “Damages,” “Ugly Betty,” “Law and Order,” and “Made in Jersey.” He also played attorney Enrico Alvarez on ABC's “All My Children” and appeared on the daytime dramas “One Life to Live,” “Loving,” and “Another World.” On the concert stage he has worked with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, Robert Shaw, and Zubin Mehta and with Symphony orchestras throughout the United States. “Jazz Review” called the release of his Latin-Jazz CD, The Beat of My Heart, “A gift from the heart from one of America’s great voices.” As a private coach in NYC, Philip prepares students for auditioning and working in today’s professional theatre by helping them develop an individual, healthy, flexible vocal technique. Mr. Hern├índez has been a faculty member at New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), NYU’s Cap 21 program and Colorado’s Perry-Mansfield School. He teaches master classes and workshops at theatres and universities across North America and has a degree in Theatre and Educational Psychology from the State University of New York. He studied acting under the tutelage of legendary teachers Stella Adler and Larry Moss. His most important role is being “daddy” to his seventeen-year-old daughter, Mariah and his three-month-old daughter Tallulah.
