Critics Picks for March 17, 2014

Tim Cummings in the role of Mitch,
Reunion at South Coast Repertory
Tim Cummings was a memorably vigorous, emotional train wreck as Ned Weeks in The Normal Heart for Fountain Theatre last year. The same combination of vulnerability and aggression holds him in good stead in Gregory S Moss’s new play, a night-into-day confrontation among three high school buddies who look at both past and present very differently now that 25 years have passed. Mitch is the bent straw that stirs this particular drink, and Cummings keeps his cast mates and the audience on their toes.—Bob Verini

Rae Gray in the role of Becky,
Slowgirl at Geffen Playhouse
Rae Gray beautifully crafts a teenager caught between childlike energy and young-adult angst. But that manic teen-hood also reflects Becky’s deep unhappiness, which comes from feeling unloved by her parents, being abandoned by her boyfriend, and apparently being mistreated by the juvenile justice system. Gray’s creation is youthfully resilient, maturely wounded.
—Dany Margolies

Phillip Kelly in the role of Tartuffe,
Tartuffe at Theatre Unleashed
Phillip Kelly’s pious hypocrite invades Orgon’s home like odorous sewer water, insinuating himself into every crevice of opportunity. As Kelly plays him, Tartuffe’s placid fa├žade of piety seems to evolve within every word spoken in his presence: it’s a craven coward when he thinks he has been unmasked, a super-charged bull in heat when attempting have his carnal way with his host’s wife, then a sneering, imperious victor when he believes he has robbed this host of all his possessions.—Julio Martinez

William Petersen in the role of Sterling,
Slowgirl at Geffen Playhouse
For a great lesson in perfect acting, William Peterson is a revelation in the Steppenwolf Theatre production of Greg Pierce’s mesmerizing two-hander character study. Petersen’s performance is right to the bone and breathtakingly heartfelt. Simple, direct, no frills. None needed.
—Travis Holder

AND FROM NEW YORK…

Andy Karl in the role of Rocky Balboa,
Rocky at the Winter Garden Theatre
In the title role, Andy Karl endows Rocky with streetwise charm and intense determination to claw his way out of Palookaville. This is probably one of the most-demanding roles on Broadway: The actor must sing, dance, and go 15 rounds in the climactic fight sequence. Karl gets a vigorous workout and emerges triumphant.
—David Sheward
