Critics’ Picks January 20

Brighid Fleming in the role of Juliana,
It is easy to believe that Brighid Fleming’s Juliana has lived a life of constant emotional confusion, existing within a monumentally unhappy marriage. Every utterance she makes is infused with doubt and distrust. But when she is sure of her ground, Juliana glows within the process of totally vanquishing her foe. Even while triumphing, though, Fleming gives sad credence to the playwright’s inference that her father’s biggest failure is robbing Juliana of the ability to be a viable human being.

Larry Cedar in the role of Thomas Jefferson,
If Larry Cedar prepared for this role by pondering, “What birds would Thomas Jefferson be?” he probably chose peacock and owl. How could Jefferson be so preening and so wise? Or is he? Cedar keeps the character dimensional, letting us get to know someone who is one of liberty’s great champions yet who is one of us.

David Melville in the role of Charles Dickens,
Part wordsmith, part clown, in the hands of David Melville this Charles Dickens is exactly as we’d hope to meet him. And yet, deep down, this Dickens knows himself as well as he knew his characters—and as well as Melville knows acting technique, head to highly polished toes.
—Dany Margolies

Armin Shimerman in the role of Leo Tolstoy,
Can an actor make Leo Tolstoy brilliant and engaging, sturdy yet self-doubting? Yes, if that actor has skill and heart like Armin Shimerman does. Playwright Scott Carter’s epigrams emerge from Shimerman’s crusty novelist like wisdom from an oracle—a hilarious Russian oracle.

AND FROM NEW YORK...

Rebecca Hall in the role of the Young Woman,
The Young Woman is something of a cipher caught in the merciless machinery of a changing America. But Rebecca Hall, in her Broadway debut, brings her to intense life. From the initial panic-stricken dash to her slow walk toward the electric chair, Hall charts the character’s futile struggle to escape male domination with passion and pathos.
