Critics Picks October 28

Mitchell Edmonds in the role of Nagg,
As old Nagg, Mitchell Edmonds seamlessly entwines pathos and humor within this hopelessly entrapped refuse of civilization, whether Nagg is piteously attempting to coax a sugar plum from his imperious son or coyly cajoling his wife into sharing a memory from their much happier early days.
—Julio Martinez

John Sloan in the role of Richard II,
After toiling for years playing young Mr. Nice Guy, John Sloan finally gets to sneer and preen and scheme and turn introspective but see no flaws as this “deputy elected by the Lord” in one of Shakespeare’s most monumental roles. Still, there’s depth and thought in Sloan’s portrayal, making the audience care about an unlikeable British royal.

Jamie Torcellini in various roles (oops, spoiler),
In a number of delightfully ridiculous roles in Charles Ludlam’s outrageous spoof, Jamie Torcellini takes the stage like a pint-sized cross-dressing Lucille Ball, bouncing around hilariously as the lord of the manor’s poor slip of a second wife Enid, then transforming with lightning speed into a limping cockney groundskeeper, a lusty mummy, a greedy Egyptian tour guide, and even a not-so fearsome werewolf. Both Torcellini and his game co-star Matthew Floyd Miller are wonderfully adept at spouting Ludlam’s groan-inducing puns with unblinking deadpanned ease.

Josh Young in the role of Che,
Josh Young was a fiery, unforgettable Judas in Des McAnuff’s Jesus Christ Superstar two years ago. Now, as chief sideline commentator on Eva Peron’s rise and fall, Young’s fire is tempered by a fundamental innocence that keeps Che from becoming (as he’s so often played) a tiresome, hectoring know-it-all. This guy wants to believe in the promise of Peronism even as he’s sure it’s a sham; by the end we share his crushed dreams, and fully comprehend his later radicalization. And as if this smart characterization weren’t enough, Young possesses one of the best voices in the business. There are big things in store for this young man. —Bob Verini

AND FROM NEW YORK...

Marin Ireland in the role of Marie Antoinette,
In this modern take on French history, Marin Ireland channels the infamously oblivious Marie Antoinette. From the moment she rushes onstage at the opening, whispering an apology for being late (totally in character), to her final epiphany just before Marie loses her head, Ireland finds seemingly infinite variations on narcissism. She becomes a screaming, spoiled child when thwarted, a charming coquette to achieve her aims, an imprisoned lioness when her son is taken from her, and a dozen other versions of the same fascinating woman.
