K-11 Interviews

Interview with the star, director and casting director of the film “K-11!” The film is the directorial debut from Jules Stewart with a knockout cast including Kate Del Castillo (“La Reina Del Sur,” “Under the Same Moon,” “Weeds”) who plays Mousey, a malicious transgendered inmate who takes charge in Los Angeles County Jail's LGBT section, and Goran Visnjic (“Red Widow,” “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) whose drug use leads him straight into Mousey's charge after he commits a crime in the haze of drug use. The film also stars DB Sweeney, Jason Mewes, Portia Doubleday and Tommy "Tiny" Lister. The casting director for the film was Pam Dixon. Besides “K-11,” Pam has worked on such films as “Green Lantern,” “The Joneses,” and “Hamlet 2,” as well as being the former president of the Casting Society of America. The film opened in select theaters and came out on video-on-demand, March 15th.

Jules Stewart / Director

What drew you to this project?

It was the uniqueness and unknown elements of the subject matter that interested me the most. As a first time director, I wanted to be involved in a project that was edgy and different.

What was your casting process for this film?

I don't think the 'casting process' was any different for K-11 than any other film. However, I did have Pam Dixon as a casting director and that was a big plus.

What makes you choose the actors that are cast in your films?

Casting for me, is 99% of the film. For years I've watched performers try to “act" which is unnatural and awkward. I look for a natural quality in a performance - an actor who actually believes they are the character they are portraying. That simple quality changes the individuals body language, speech and facial expressions. The actor becomes a chameleon.

Kate Del Castillo / Mousey

What was your audition process for this film?

I didn't audition really. I just had a meeting with Jules and the producer, and I guess I was just lucky they had seen my reel somewhere. I think Jules had seen a poster of me on a bus and was intrigued.

Did you play the character of Mousey as a woman or a man?

As a woman who's trapped in a man's body which is transitioning...but she lets her masculine side come out when she needs it.

If you could give one piece of advice to up and coming actors what would it be?

Have fun. Be true to what you really want. Follow your instinct. Prepare. I did a lot of research and worked even on my voice and walking.

Pam Dixon / Casting Director

What was your audition process for “K-11?”

The audition process for K-11 was wide open. We opened the auditions to actors access and did a reach out program to the gay and lesbian and transgender community. Everyone was given a scene and taped which was then shown to the director. We auditioned hundreds of actors. We were very open to seeing actors with few or none credits.

Due to the nature of the film were you looking for men or women to cast as the transvestites?

We looked at both men and women for all the roles so that we could end up with the best actor.

As a casting director what would be the one piece of advice you’d give an actor to prepare for an audition?

The best advice I can give to prepare for an audition is "Don't Wing It". Good preparation is the best way to get the confidence you need when you walk into a room.
