Q&A with Casting Director Claire Simon, C.S.A.

A Casting Director since 1996, Claire Simon casts primarily film, television and theater as well as commercials. Current projects include casting the first two seasons of the Starz series Boss with Kelsey Grammar, for which he won a Golden Globe; The first season for the Fox series, Mob Doctor, as well as the film Man of Steele (due out in 2013) and Contagion, directed by Steven Soderbergh. She won the Artios Award for Outstanding Achievement for Dramatic Casting for the Fox series Prison Break. In addition, she's cast for Indiana Repertory Theatre, Syracuse Rep., The Asolo Theatre, Milwaukee Rep, The New Theatre, Cleveland Playhouse and the long running hit show Million Dollar Quartet. Prior to that Claire was a talent agent for five years.

What was your background before becoming a casting director and how did it help or hinder you in your current career?

Claire: I started out as an actor, worked in advertising, then was a talent agent for five years before becoming a casting director. Everything I did helped me in what I do know, I feel lucky to have seen this business from a lot of different perspectives.

We've often discuss how casting is a process and that you start going one way and end up with an actor that the writer/director never imagined being the one that was ultimately cast. Do you have an incident in which your input changed the direction of who was cast?

Claire: Yes, it happens all the time. Something that would be traditionally male, like a cop or detective, we will bring in a great strong woman that will book it, I always try thinking out of the box so we can make the choices interesting and creative.

As a casting director based in Chicago, what are some of the frustrations and/or benefits of casting here and in the Midwest?

Claire: Well the benefits are that it’s a fantastic city filled with really talented down to earth actors with great work ethics. The downside is that everyone assumes that an actor coming from LA or NY is stronger and books them for the really large roles a lot of the time. It gets a little frustrating.

How has the technology used by casting to receive submissions changed how you do your job?

Claire: It makes it much, much faster and efficient. I think it saves everyone a ton of money too.

In general how many actors do you schedule for a commercial vs. a film, TV or a theatre project and how does the process differ for the four mediums?

Claire: I usually schedule 5 actors per role for a director’s session for TV or Film. Commercials we see as many actors as we can get in for the day.

What advice do you have for actors when they are auditioning?

Claire: Be prepared (as though you could actually get the role), be pleasant, be professional and make a strong choice.

What do actors do in the audition room that tends to hurt them from being considered for a role? What helps them?

Claire: Not being prepared at all, reading the sides with their head in the paper so nothing is going on, not dressing for the role (coming in wearing jeans and a tee shirt for the role of a lawyer), not taking direction.
